Croc of Shit

Croc of Shit

I’ve been in Madagascar for more than four years now. There’s a lot I haven’t yet seen or done. I may never see a fossa or an aye-aye in the wild, but last week I nearly stepped in this:

Croc of Shit
I might be a little too pleased with it.

We were only about 15 miles (24 km) out of Antananarivo — just past the Lemurs Park, if you know the area.

And if you really know the area, from this spot we could see the town of Arivonimamo — an erstwhile “provisional autonomous zone” where the anarchist anthropologist David Graeber lived and studied years before becoming a leading figure in the Occupy Wall Street movement. How’s that for an auspicious Croc of shit?

I digress.

We pulled off the road to pee and call for directions. Beside the road there was a generous grassy bank peppered with zebu cow pies. As I carefully stepped through the grass to get to a bush, I saw the Croc. I did my business and returned for the photo.

Unsurprisingly, this is not the first time a Croc has been photographed or Photoshopped in this condition.
