I’ve been in Madagascar for more than four years now. There’s a lot I haven’t yet seen or done. I may never see a fossa or an aye-aye in the wild, but last week I nearly stepped in this:
We were only about 15 miles (24 km) out of Antananarivo — just past the Lemurs Park, if you know the area.
And if you really know the area, from this spot we could see the town of Arivonimamo — an erstwhile “provisional autonomous zone” where the
anarchist anthropologist David Graeber lived and studied years before becoming a leading figure in the Occupy Wall Street movement. How’s that for an auspicious Croc of shit?
We pulled off the road to pee and call for directions. Beside the road there was a generous grassy bank peppered with zebu cow pies. As I carefully stepped through the grass to get to a bush, I saw the Croc. I did my business and returned for the photo.
Unsurprisingly, this is not the first time a Croc has been photographed or Photoshopped in this condition.
